The 4Cs - Diamond Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight

The 4Cs of Diamond Quality

The 4Cs — Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat Weight — are the globally recognised standards used to assess a diamond’s quality and value. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), these criteria form the foundation of professional diamond grading.

Color

GIA’s diamond color grading system measures the absence of color, ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). While differences between grades are often invisible to the untrained eye, they can significantly influence both beauty and value.

Cut

A diamond’s cut is the most important factor affecting its sparkle. Precision in proportions, symmetry, and polish allows light to reflect brilliantly. The finer the cut, the more fire, brilliance, and life a diamond will display.

Clarity

Formed deep within the earth under intense heat and pressure, natural diamonds often contain unique internal characteristics known as inclusions or surface features called blemishes. The fewer and less visible these characteristics, the closer a diamond is to flawless—and the more valuable it becomes.

Carat Weight

Diamond weight is measured in carats, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are rarer and therefore command higher prices, assuming all other quality factors are equal.

GIA Grading Report

The GIA Diamond Grading Report provides a detailed assessment of a diamond’s 4Cs, along with proportion diagrams and clarity plots. For select stones, the GIA Diamond Dossier® includes the same grading information without a plotted clarity diagram.

GIA grading reports are issued for loose, natural diamonds in the D–Z color range weighing 0.15 carats or more—offering transparency, trust, and peace of mind.

Understanding the 4Cs is the first step to choosing a diamond that truly shines.
