Why We Use an Independent Valuer

At AG & CO, we believe in absolute transparency and professionalism. That’s why we do not issue in-house valuations. Many retail jewellers write their own, which can raise concerns about accuracy, qualifications, and conflict of interest.

A genuine valuation should always be completed by an independent expert — not someone employed by the seller. Our reports are prepared by a certified valuer from Jewellery Valuations Australia, a trusted third-party service with NCJV-registered professionals trained in diamond grading, gemstone identification, and valuation science.

These valuers adhere to rigorous industry standards and participate in ongoing education to ensure their expertise remains current and trusted. This ensures the report you receive is recognised by insurers and backed by professional integrity — not sales-driven estimations.

What is a jewellery valuation report?

A jewellery valuation report is a formal, written document prepared by a certified expert that outlines the full retail replacement value of your jewellery. It includes a detailed description of the item, gemstone and metal specifications, high-resolution photographs, and a professionally assessed retail replacement figure.

This report is most often used for insurance purposes, but it can also be useful for estate planning, legal proceedings, and private resale. A proper valuation provides security, peace of mind, and formal documentation that reflects the true market value of your jewellery at the time of issue.

Why is an independent valuation so important?

An independent valuation ensures that your jewellery is being appraised by a qualified expert who has no financial interest in the sale of the item. This removes any conflict of interest and guarantees that the valuation is objective, accurate, and recognised by all major insurers.

Without independent valuation, the report could be inflated, misleading, or not accepted by insurance providers. At AG & CO, we believe transparency is essential — and that your documentation should be just as trustworthy as the jewellery itself.

Can’t my jeweller just write a valuation themselves?

Many retail jewellers still issue their own “valuation certificates,” but this practice is often problematic. In many cases, the person writing the document may not be qualified or certified, and they are not truly independent — because they are employed by the company selling the ring.

This presents a clear conflict of interest. Valuations should always be performed by a third party with no affiliation to the sale. A self-issued certificate may not be accepted by insurers, and often doesn’t reflect true replacement value.

What makes a valuation valid and credible?

For a valuation to be considered professionally credible, it must be prepared by a registered valuer — ideally someone who is certified by the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV).

NCJV-registered valuers are required to complete formal qualifications in gemmology, diamond grading, and valuation methodology. They also undergo continuing education to remain up to date with market trends and appraisal standards. Their reports are legally recognised and trusted by insurers, legal entities, and collectors.

Who performs AG & CO’s valuations?

All AG & CO valuations are performed through our external partner, Jewellery Valuations Australia — a respected third-party organisation using NCJV-registered valuers.

They are completely independent from our business, ensuring that the appraisal is fair, unbiased, and professionally recognised across Australia. We handle the full coordination process for you, from secure handoff to delivery of your final report.

Is a valuation included with every purchase?

Valuation reports are available as an optional add-on for $300 per item. We do not include valuations automatically, as many clients do not require insurance documentation or prefer to arrange valuations later.

You can request a valuation during your consultation or add it to your order at any time before your ring is shipped.

Why do I need a valuation for insurance?

Most insurance companies require a certified valuation before they will issue a policy for your jewellery. This document sets the official retail replacement value and acts as proof of quality and ownership should your item ever be lost, stolen, or damaged.

Without it, claims may be delayed, underpaid, or rejected. Having a valuation ensures that your ring is protected to its full worth.

 Can I request a valuation after receiving my jewellery?

Yes — we’re happy to organise a valuation at any time, even after your purchase has been completed. Whether it’s weeks or years after your original order, you can simply contact our team to request a valuation, and we’ll take care of the rest. 

Can I use the valuation for resale or legal purposes?

Yes. While valuation reports are most commonly used for insurance, they are also helpful in estate planning, gifting, legal documentation, or private resale.
